BASEBALL HISTORY -- February 19

In 1885, Paul Hines, a Providence Grays outfielder and resident of Washington, D.C., had accepted a challenge to catch a ball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument, a distance of 535 feet to the ground. The New York Clipper published some ominous thoughts about the danger involved, due to the force of a ball falling from that height, and warned Hines. That stunt was canceled a week later.
