Oakland lefty Ken Holtzman beat New York's Jon Matlack in Games 1 and 7 of the 1973 Series. However, Matlack bested Holtzman in Game 4. The Mets led three games to two, but Hunter beat Tom Seaver in Game 6 and Oakland's relief corps of Darold Knowles and Rollie Fingers closed out the Mets in the final two games.
